About James & Zingaro

James Evenson is a professional offshore sailor, former U.S. Navy submarine navigator, and author of Be The Captain. Sailing Zingaro is the long-term offshore project where the philosophy gets tested: real miles, real decisions, and real consequences.

Short version

I enlisted in the submarine service at 19 and spent five years learning navigation, systems, and how to make decisions when the margin for error is zero.

At 25, I bought my first sailboat. Within six months I moved aboard—and I haven’t gone back to “normal life” since.

Since then, I’ve logged roughly 85,000 nautical miles offshore across the Atlantic and Pacific, owned multiple boats, and made landfalls in places that most sailors only point at on a chart—Easter Island, Fanning Island, and Pitcairn among them.

What I do now

Most people find me through the YouTube channel. Some come because they want to sail farther. Others come because they’re about to make an expensive decision (boat purchase, refit, passage plan) and they want a second set of eyes from someone who’s actually done it offshore.

These days, my work falls into three lanes:

  • Education: writing and tools that help sailors build judgment before they need it.
  • Consulting: limited one-on-one sessions for offshore decisions and strategy.
  • Expeditions: Zingaro projects and occasional crew opportunities when they align with the mission (not a charter model).

If you’re trying to become the kind of sailor who stays calm when the plan falls apart, you’re in the right place.
